The Cubs struck a blow last night by acquiring the services of Alex Bregman.
The veteran outfielder, renowned for his excellent locker-room skills, signed a $175 million deal with the Cubs. The Arizona native signed a deal that will allow him to practice in the Cactus League.
For Chicago sports fans, last night was a wild ride. Not only did Alex Bregman (who knows how to win in the playoffs) come to town, but the Bears won a playoff game via a big comeback.
And Bregman has already pointed that out on his social networks.

Last year, the Cubs were on Bregman's case, but they weren't offering enough money. The Tigers ($171.5 million over six years) and the Red Sox ($120 million over three years with opt-outs) led the way.
This year, the Cubs decided to take the bull by the horns, offering $35 million per year (with some money deferred, but still) over five years. It worked to lure Scott Boras' client to town.
The Chicago club's executives no doubt knew that to avoid Bregman returning to Boston, where he was appreciated and where he enjoyed playing, they had to beat the Red Sox's offer. If the offer had been tied, he would probably have chosen Boston.
According to Jon Heyman, the Red Sox were offering around $160 million for Bregman. We're talking $15 million less, or $3 million per season.

For a millionaire, it doesn't change the world, you might say. But if the Red Sox weren't able to match the offer, we have to understand that money rules the world and it makes sense that the player chose the most lucrative offer. It's also a question of respect for these guys.
You'd think Boston would have no one else to blame… especially after dropping Rafael Devers for nothing in the end.
Will they roll up their sleeves and sign Bo Bichette? To sign Eugenio Suarez? To get Nolan Arenado out of St. Louis? We'll have to wait and see.
But what comes next in Boston will be fascinating.

- Nice lineup.
How many games would this team win?

- Good thing Alex Bregman's signing wasn't announced during Red Sox fans' Fenway Fest…
The Red Sox should thank their lucky stars Bregman didn't sign before Fenway Fest, or today could've been ugly if the discourse on Twitter right now is any indication.
Maybe signing Bo Bichette could change things, but otherwise this will only inflame the club's image problem. https://t.co/Lq15lmbqNl
