Ahh, that infamous ménage à trois in front of the net… When will it be settled?

It's great to see Jacob Fowler playing and getting big-league experience, but the Canadiens will have to make a choice sooner rather than later.

A three-way partnership isn't ideal for the progress of two young goalies (Fowler and Jakub Dobes), and it's not much better for a veteran trying to find his feet (Samuel Montembeault).

One of the two young goalies will have to go to Laval eventually, and seeing Fowler playing a lot and Dobes not playing at all, it's easy to conclude that Dobes will be the one to go back down.

Fowler is the one with the best statistics. On the other hand, the Czech goalie is the only Habs goalie with at least 10 wins (13). Montembeault has eight and Fowler has four.

This afternoon, the Habs announced an event on February 22, the Club Skills Competition, and Dobes is one of three club players on the bill.

Obviously, this doesn't mean that he won't be going to Laval at all, but it does sound as if the Habs have already made up their mind about the ménage à trois.

Even if his stats aren't great, Dobes still has a very good 13-5-3 record.

If it were up to me, I'd send Fowler to Laval for a number of reasons.

Even if he has the best stats of the three goalies, it's still a smaller sample size and you have to be careful with that.

The experience Fowler has gained playing for the big club will certainly be of great benefit to him, and he'll be coming to Laval with a lot of confidence. This would allow him to dominate and play a lot more with the Rocket, and arrive at the next practice camp even more ready.

Dobes doesn't necessarily deserve to return to Laval. But he did give the Habs a number of wins.

And let's not forget that Dobes seems quite emotionally fragile. He cried after a loss because he puts too much pressure on himself, so I can't imagine how it would affect him to be demoted to the AHL.

For now, let's keep the ménage à trois for a few games, but I really think Fowler is the logical choice to go back down.

Overtime

– With the current state of the arena, fans can rest assured.

– Mike Matheson and Noah Dobson are not among the six reserve players (out of 15) announced. The chances of Samuel Montembeault being among them are pretty slim.
