Tonight, the Canadiens take on the Detroit Red Wings for first place in the Atlantic. It's a crucial game… and for the occasion, it's Jacob Fowler who will be in net.
He's on a fine run since arriving in town: the choice is defensible.
That said, looking back, Jakub Dobes has really lost his place in the three-goal rotation. He's only had one start since December 21, and the other two are really playing more than he is.
But what's interesting is that Mathias Brunet, in response to an Internet user who wondered if the Habs were thinking of trading Dobes, talked about the goalie's market value… and according to the journalist, it's obviously not very high:
[Jakub] Dobes doesn't have a huge value. – Mathias Brunet
Dobes doesn't have a huge value and he can go to Laval without waivers
– Mathias Brunet (@mathiasbrunet) January 10, 2026
What all this indicates is that the most likely scenario is that Dobes will return to Laval shortly. It's probably not set in stone yet, but right now, Fowler seems to have overtaken him in the pecking order.
A terrible performance from Fowler tonight could possibly change things, that said. But right now, it seems clear that Fowler is ahead of Dobes.
In fact, sending Dobes back to Laval wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. It would allow him to get a ton of games to continue his development, which he's not getting at the moment in the NHL.
At the same time, it would put an end to the ménage à trois with the Habs (which would probably suit everyone), and allow Martin St-Louis to alternate between his two most trusted goaltenders at the moment. And in the event of a problem with Fowler or Montembeault, the club could simply recall Dobes.
