Lane Hutson is having a fantastic season.

At the time of writing, he is the third-highest scoring defenseman in the NHL. Cale Makar (48 points) and Zach Werenski (45 points) are ahead of Hutson and his 42 points in as many games.

The Habs defenseman is also the second-best passer in the league among players in his position so far this season. But…

But that's not enough for Hutson to be among the favorites for the Norris Trophy right now, according to NHL experts.

Hutson ranks 5th (tied with Moritz Seider) in a recent ranking with his 12 accumulated points: ahead of him are Cale Makar (80 points), Zach Werenski (57 points), Miro Heiskanen (37 points), and Quinn Hughes (22 points).

What do we think?

Please note: I'm not saying that Lane Hutson should be the obvious choice for the next Norris Trophy.

Cale Makar is having a truly dominant season, and he's the one likely to walk away with the trophy if he can keep up the pace.

But like Martin St-Louis (who didn't receive a single vote for the Jack Adams Trophy), I tend to think that the Habs defenseman deserves more love right now. It's nice to see him on a list like the one above… but with what he's been doing lately, I'd have liked to see him higher on the list.

Oh well.

Even if Hutson doesn't win the Norris Trophy and doesn't finish in the top three in the voting, it doesn't matter.

Because in Montreal, everyone knows how important the little defenseman is to the Canadiens' success. Everyone knows that he's doing really special things on the ice… and that's what's important.

If others can't recognize that, too bad for them.

Overtime

– Hehe.

– Logical.

– A little too soft for my taste.

– He's having quite a season.
