Kent Hughes has improved his team in recent weeks.

He acquired Phillip Danault from Los Angeles because there was a (significant) hole at center in Martin St-Louis' lineup.

And while the GM thinks the upcoming deadline will be quieter than usual, that doesn't mean he's done making moves.

He did talk about it this morning, after all… and there's one sentence in particular that stands out for me.

Talking about the market, Hughes mentioned that it's a bit complicated because there are so many teams in the playoff race right now. And he was referring in particular to the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are having a… surprising season.

It's as if he meant Sidney Crosby without meaning to. Or… it's as if he wanted to talk about Sidney Crosby without talking about Sidney Crosby.

We know GMs aren't allowed to talk openly about another team's players, after all….

The ties between the Habs and Sidney Crosby are still alive.

And they're not going to die as long as #87 has made up his mind about his future. Everyone on the planet knows that he loves playing in Pittsburgh and that he's loyal to the Penguins… but everyone on the planet also knows that he wants to win the Stanley Cup.

Right now, his team's unexpected success is complicating matters. And it sure looks like Kent Hughes knows it…

The idea of bringing Crosby to Montreal isn't dead, because right now, the Canadiens are still looking for a top-6 player.

They're still looking for the famous center who can play on the team's second unit, and Kent Hughes has been looking for that player for a long time. As we know, the Canadiens' GM has more than one trick up his sleeve, and it makes you wonder if the situation in Pittsburgh is starting to upset his plans for the coming weeks.

But just the fact that Hughes talked about the Penguins in this way today raises a few questions.
