The Canadiens' situation in net is the talk of the town.

We know… because there are three goalies in Montreal right now. Jacob Fowler, Jakub Dobes, and Samuel Montembeault are all with the big club at the time of writing.

And we also know that a threesome isn't ideal. Kent Hughes spoke about this during his mid-season review today.

The GM said it out loud: ideally, the ménage à trois won't last forever. Kent Hughes mentioned that there won't necessarily be any changes in the next 24 hours because the club has games to play on Wednesday and Thursday… but we sensed from his comments that there's a decision to be made.

And the choice may be hard to make with the performance of the three guys right now…

Kent Hughes wouldn't identify the team's #1 goalie.

He wouldn't give Samuel Montembeault a vote of confidence, and he wouldn't name him as the club's #1. That's saying a lot.

Hughes referred to when Monty arrived… saying that right now, it's the hottest goalie who has to play to help the club win as much as possible.

That's pretty clear…

All that to say, then, that we don't have any clearer answers regarding the situation of the goalkeepers in Montreal. But from what we understand, there won't be three guys sharing the work until the end of the season, and that makes sense too.

It remains to be seen what the plan will be. But a little bird tells me that if Monty and Dobes are able to play well soon, Fowler may be back in the AHL before too long, because he needs to play as much as possible in order to progress.

Stay tuned.

Hughes is still singing Jacob Fowler's praises.

He's impressed by what he sees from his youngster, and that's normal. The American is impressive:
