Earlier today, Kent Hughes gave an update on his club's first half of the season. And listening to the GM, it became clear that the club, at the moment, is ahead of the game in terms of management.
And in fact, the club's 23-13-6 record proves it: the Habs have been one of the best teams in the Atlantic since the start of the season.
Increasingly, then, we're beginning to envision a world in which the Habs will be back in the playoffs this spring. But Grant McCagg sees an even bigger picture for this club.
McCagg, on his HabsCast podcast, said that the Canadiens, despite some problems, are capable of being a good club this season… and he went even further:
I see no reason why the Habs can't win the East this year. – Grant McCagg
“I'm not mailing the Cup to Colorado
Do I think the Habs can contend THIS year? Sure. Why not?
A great discussion today with @EricMacramalla.

McCagg points out that there's a lot of parity in the East (remember: no club has a record below .500), so there's no real power to dislodge. In fact, all the clubs in the East have question marks.
No, it's not just the Habs who have them.
So, in a world where the Habs are getting their injured players back for the playoffs, and are able to solidify their situation in front of the net, they can really aspire to great things this season, McCagg believes. Of course, all this implies that the things that are going well will continue to go well, too.
But what's clear is that the Habs are a good team in a conference that can be taken. There's still a long way to go, but if things continue as they are, it's true that the Habs' playoff run could be longer than last year.
Let's see what the next few months have in store for this team.

– Will this be the case despite injuries to Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox?
According to an NHL source who recently spoke to me, #NYR GM Chris Drury has the green light to and is looking to make a ‘shake up' trade to get his team into the Stanley Cup playoffs.
