Lane Hutson: proof that he’s more than just a point producer

Things are going well for Lane Hutson these days, right?

The second-year jinx isn't hitting the man the Americans didn't want to go to the Olympics. After all, he's been riding at an incredible pace for a while now.

The guys at BPM Sports pointed it out on the radio this morning: since December 11, Hutson has been the NHL's top point producer among defensemen.

And it's not even close.

Since December 11, Hutson has played 13 games. And in that time, he's collected 20 points, six more than anyone else on the blue line.

But his two goals and 18 points are there for all to see.

What also needs to be highlighted is the fact that Hutson may produce points, but he's more than that. He's more than a guy who can produce points.

In fact, when you look at Hutson's differential, he leads all NHL defensemen (+16) in that respect, which is no mean feat.

Renaud Lavoie also spoke to BPM Sports this morning.

Obviously, the differential is worth what it's worth. But when you see that he's dominating like this, it's data that deserves our attention because it speaks volumes.

You know, +16 in 13 games is a positive difference of more than one goal per game— plus the power play!

The Olympic team may have said no to Lane Hutson, but Martin St-Louis is clearly happy to count on him every night. He plays him a lot because he's good on 200 feet.

And good for the Habs if the Americans chose to give him off-weeks in February.
