There were 13 games on the National Hockey League schedule yesterday, with 26 of the 32 teams in action.

It was a very busy day of hockey, which gave us a number of interesting highlights.

Here are the highlights.

1. Auston Matthews makes Leafs history

With the Maple Leafs visiting the Islanders in New York yesterday, there was a chance for Maple Leafs history to be made.

Well, that's exactly what happened, as with two goals, Auston Matthews became the all-time leading scorer for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

With 421 goals, Matthews surpasses Mats Sundin to become the Leafs' all-time leading scorer.

That's a pretty crazy feat for Matthews, considering he's only 28, and he's likely to stretch that record for a long time to come.

Mats Sundin took the time to congratulate Matthews on the record.

Matthews' former teammate, Mitch Marner, also took the time to congratulate the Leafs' #34.

Unfortunately, the Leafs lost this game 4-3 in overtime.

2. Matthew Schaefer steals the spotlight from Matthews

All the spotlight was on Matthews for his record-breaking two goals, but 18-year-old rookie Matthew Schaefer decided to steal the show afterwards.

Indeed, the Islanders' #48 scored an absolutely sensational goal to tie the game 2-2, and then give the Islanders the win in overtime.

Check out this absolutely incredible climb.

Schaefer now has 12 goals and 28 points in 42 games this season as an 18-year-old rookie defenseman.

Note that in the win, Emil Heineman picked up a goal and an assist, giving him 13 goals and 20 points in 42 games.

3. Nathan MacKinnon shines in Nordiques win over Whalers

Yesterday was a historic game, as the Quebec Nordiques visited the Hartford Whalers.

This was made possible by the Colorado Avalanche, sporting Nordiques colors, and the Carolina Hurricanes, proudly wearing Whalers colors.

It was really nice to see two old uniforms in action against each other, not to mention a whole lot of hockey.

In the end, it was the Quebec Nordiques who prevailed 5-3 over the Hartford Whalers, with Nathan MacKinnon shining for Quebec with four points.

He scored the insurance goal in an empty net in a rather comical fashion, as he was hooked without being able to shoot.

And here's a great pass from him.

MacKinnon now has 35 goals and 74 points in 40 games, with a +51 rating.

4. Hat trick for Darren Raddysh

In Victor Hedman's absence this season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, there's a rather unsung defenseman who has stepped up and taken over with flying colors.

Darren Raddysh was given the chance to play as the #1 defenseman, and he took it brilliantly.

Raddysh, a 29-year-old right-handed defenseman who was never drafted, is currently enjoying a remarkable season with 34 points, including 12 goals, in 35 games.

He scored his first career hat trick yesterday in the Lightning's 7-3 win over the San Jose Sharks.

Raddysh scored all three of his goals with a lead on the catch.

In short, it's a great story for Tampa Bay, as Raddysh stands out as one of the NHL's best defensemen.

He now ranks 7th in the NHL in scoring among defensemen.

5. Logan Stanley punches Brady Tkachuk in the face

In the Ottawa Senators' 4-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets, Jets defenseman Logan Stanley punched Brady Tkachuk in the face in an intense scene.

It was a very unsightly punch from Stanley, which enraged Tkachuk.

It made for quite a scene, which never ended in a fight.
