After a heartbreaking loss in Tampa Bay, the Canadiens return to action tonight against the Florida Panthers.

Surprise: it'll be Samuel Montembeault in net. The Québécois hasn't started an NHL game in nearly a month, since December 2. In the meantime, he started two games with the Rocket, where he allowed five goals on 52 shots.

Fatigue will be no excuse in his case. He'll be facing a very big game against his former club and, coincidentally, the two-time defending champions.

In any case, Martin St-Louis has not given him an easy task in what could be his last-chance match.

Because yes, if Monty doesn't play up to his potential, this could be his last game with the Canadiens. I don't think St-Louis, who wants to win, will trust him again this season. In any case, Renaud Lavoie is confident.

The Panthers started the season on the wrong foot, but here they are again.

They're just two points behind the Habs and third in the Atlantic. A big four-point game.

This game has playoff allure, presumably, but it will also allow the coaching staff to make a more informed decision about the ménage à trois.

With a good game, Jacob Fowler could be returned to Laval. If not, Monty could be sent packing.

For tonight's game, another change will take place: Adam Engstrom will take Jayden Struble's place.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Juraj Slafkovsky in action, fresh from his best week ever in the NHL, and Nick Suzuki, who will be playing his last game before finding out if he'll be part of the Canadian squad at the next Olympics.

A press conference will be held on New Year's Eve to unveil the roster.
