Tonight, the Canadiens take on the Panthers in Sunrise. It'll be an important game for the standings… but above all, it'll be a decisive match-up for the future in front of the net.
The reason? Tonight, it's Samuel Montembeault who will be in goal for the club. The Québécois, who hasn't had a start since December 2, is having a really tough season, to the point where he's been spending some time in Laval.
Monty will have to make a big start tonight, while youngsters Jacob Fowler and Jakub Dobes are playing some good hockey. But the good news is that his teammates still seem to have faith in him.
Brendan Gallagher, chatting to the media, gave his teammate some love, praising his perseverance and work ethic.
But what he did note was that when Montembeault is in front of the net, the guys in front of him always have confidence… and that won't change today.
Brendan Gallagher today on Sam Montembeault:
“He's battled hard, he's worked hard. There have been times this year, it hasn't gone his way but his mentality and work ethic hasn't changed. Our belief in him hasn't wavered either…When he's in the net, you're always confident and… pic.twitter.com/cFz3rwky6Y

Of course, it makes sense that Gallagher would say that. He obviously wasn't going to plant his teammate either, and the guys probably want to do everything they can to get Montembeault in the best possible shape tonight.
It'll be Monty's first NHL start in four weeks: yes, it'll be a huge test, and against a good team at that.
However, over the last few months, we've noticed that the club seems to be more hesitant when Montembeault is in front of the net. It's one thing to say that the guys still have confidence in him… but that has to translate onto the ice tonight, too.
I have a feeling that giving him a little cushion and scoring a few quick goals would do Monty a world of good.

Elliotte Friedman: Re Egor Zamula: He's at $1.7m; he's represented by Texier's agent who rather terminated his deal so he could sign as a free agent; I think there'd be interest at a lower number; Philly prefers a trade for a player – Saturday Headlines (12/27)
