It's been almost a year now since the Blue Jays agreed with Anthony Santander on the terms of a big five-year contract. After hitting a ton of long balls in Baltimore, Santander came to Toronto to offer protection to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

And he had $92.5 million good reasons for choosing Toronto for five years.

That said, his first year in town was pretty abysmal. Injuries limited him to 54 games, and he was pretty terrible in that stretch.

So, a year later, we're wondering where Santander fits in Toronto… and according to Rob Longley, we shouldn't rule out the possibility that his future isn't in Canada.

Because, as Longley notes, don't be surprised if the club gets rid of him if they have better options and things don't work out for Santander.

We've seen this winter that the Jays are prepared to do just about anything to have the best possible team on the field. The club isn't afraid to spend money, even if that money is used to add up by subtraction.

Yariel Rodriguez, for example, was a problem in the bullpen: that didn't stop the club from taking him out of its 40-man roster despite his big contract.

In reality, then, just because he has a big contract in his pocket doesn't mean Santander's place in the lineup is assured. The club is going to give him a chance to prove himself, but it's not going to go all out if it continues to be tough for Santander at bat.

Particularly as it's not defensively that he's going to make himself indispensable, we agree.

We'll see what awaits Santander in 2026, but we shouldn't assume that his future lies in Toronto if he doesn't get back on track. It just goes to show that Toronto's priorities are in the right place.
