Last night, Canada won its first match at the CMJ. The club came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic in an intense, emotionally-charged match.

Porter Martone's gesture at the end of the match, for example, was one that got everyone talking. He was seen taunting the Czech bench after scoring in an empty net, which earned him a penalty.

And coming from the team captain, it was quite ordinary.

And today, in front of the media, Martone acknowledged his mistake. He noted that his gesture deserved an apology and that it was unacceptable for him to do that.

He acknowledged that it was not the right example to set as captain.

Interestingly, Hockey Canada also apologized for yesterday's game. However, this apology was linked to an entirely different event, which took place after the game.

Team Canada's junior players left the ice before shaking hands with the Czech players. It's important to remember that after every game, there's a handshake between the two clubs that have just played.

The organization therefore took the trouble to issue a public apology.

One has to wonder if Martone's gesture (and the general intensity we saw during the game) led to the ÉCJ guys leaving the ice without shaking hands with their opponents. But what's clear is that, despite last night's victory, Canada's players made news for all the wrong reasons.

Let's see if the duel with the Latvians will be a little less intense today.
