It's been over four years since Marc Bergevin lost his position as GM of the Canadiens. The club's horrendous start to the season following its appearance in the finals a few months earlier had sealed the fate of a GM who already seemed to have one foot out the door.

He had entered the last year of his contract without an extension in his pocket: that's usually a sign that a manager's days are numbered.

Since then, Bergevin has spent time with the Kings as an advisor. Recently, however, things have been looking up for him: he was a finalist in the race for the Islanders' GM role, he was named GM of Team Canada at the Spengler Cup, and he accepted a position as assistant to Jarmo Kekalainen with the Sabres.

And Pierre LeBrun, in a piece for The Athletic, discussed Bergevin's case… and there's one sentence that's pretty interesting:

The chances of him getting another GM job sooner or later are good. – Pierre LeBrun

One might think that Bergevin, who was ignored by the Kings when they had to find a GM in recent months, might have decided to go the Buffalo route for this very reason. In an assistant role, his name will circulate more around the league… especially if the Sabres finally manage to turn the corner.

And if they do, remember that the Sabres just fired their GM and replaced him with his assistant. Maybe they'll do it again in a few years, you know.

Remember that a few years ago, Bergevin's name was considered to replace Kyle Dubas in Toronto. And with the Maple Leafs chomping at the bit these days, maybe the club will be tempted to clean house… and maybe Brad Treliving will be there then.

Maybe that's when a door will open for Bergevin.

Overtime

– That sounds a bit harsh.

– Interesting.

– Great read on the Rangers.
