Sometimes in the National Hockey League, things take a long time to come to fruition, whether through a transaction or otherwise.
But in the case of Phillip Danault, let's just say it's been a long time coming.
The Québécois' name came up in trade rumors last week, and last night he was traded to the Canadiens by the Los Angeles Kings.
It was a quick and efficient transaction, especially in the last few days.
We knew that the Canadiens were one of the front-runners to acquire Phillip Danault, ahead of a host of other teams.
In fact, as Arpon Basu reports, Kings general manager Ken Holland has spoken to more than half the NHL teams about Danault.

More than 16 teams called the Kings to inquire about the québécois' availability and potentially construct a deal.
This means that despite his meager five assists in 30 games this season, Danault was highly coveted across the NHL, given that he's an experienced left-handed center who excels at face-offs.
There's a lot to like about the acquisition of Phillip Danault.
1. The price paid
2. Left-handed center
3. Good at face-offs
4. EXPERIENCE
5. Appreciated by many teammates
6. Everyone in the right chair– Anthony Marcotte (@anthonymarcotte) December 20, 2025
It's an acquisition that will do the Habs a world of good, as it will fill the leadership void left by the departure of Christian Dvorak.

The Habs will have had the upper hand on several NHL teams in this matter, bringing Danault back to Montreal after four full seasons in Los Angeles.
The arrival of the 32-year-old Québécois clearly changes the roster, while the dismissal of Jared Davidson, first announced by my colleague Max Truman last night, was confirmed this morning.

In short, Danault is back in Montreal, and we can't wait to see him in action.
Overtime
– Good news from the Devils.
Timo Meier is back from his personal leave and activated off non-roster.
Sheldon Keefe said last night he expected to get some bodies back for Sunday… well this certainly is a big boost. #NJDevils are off today. Back at it against the Sabres on Sunday. https://t.co/Q3Dr60mteF

– The Eastern Conference is extremely tight.
Some people are surprised CBJ are buyers, but the Eastern Conference is so jammed (all 16 teams .500 or better in points percentage), the Jackets feel they can still get into the playoff race. If not, there's always the option of flipping Marchment at the deadline. The top players on CBJ were…
