Phillip Danault was appreciated in the dressing room when he played in Montreal.
And the reason is simple: he always did what he had to do without bothering anyone… and on the ice, he fulfilled his role to perfection.
When a guy gives his all on the ice and is good to his teammates in the locker room… it's often a good sign.
That said, it should come as no surprise that the Canadiens' players are happy to have him back in town. In a Journal de Montréal article, we read that Brendan Gallagher is happy to see him back, that Jake Evans is happy to see a guy who helped him become the player he is back with the same team…
And Nick Suzuki, for his part, is happy to know that the acquisition of Danault will help the club on certain levels because of his experience. They played together during the team's run to the finals (2021) and know each other well.
Kent Hughes thinks like Danault, too: the Habs GM has added experience to his group, and it feels good.
Habs GM Kent Hughes today on trading for Phil Danault:
We hope he's gonna bring in experience, we know he's been here before. I think people in this market know what he is as a hockey player. We don't think the season he's having right now is necessarily indicative of the… pic.twitter.com/DpvAldywf1

I wonder how much this played a role in Kent Hughes' decision.
After all, the Habs GM knew that Danault had played with some of the same guys who are currently in Montreal. And even if he wasn't in charge when Danault was, Hughes also knew that the Québécois was a popular guy in the Montreal dressing room.
In the end, acquiring the Québécois fulfilled several criteria:
- The Habs fill their hole at center
- The Habs add experience to the locker room
- The Habs bring in a guy who is already a valued member of the team
It's a good deal in the eyes of the players, in any case. And it makes you wonder if it can energize this club in the coming weeks, as it did with Alexandre Carrier last year…
