It's been clear for over a week now that Phillip Danault is likely to be traded by the Los Angeles Kings, considering his horrible start to the season with just five assists and no goals in 30 games.

The Québécois had become a burden for the Kings, who no longer wanted him and his contract.

The feeling was mutual, as Danault wanted out of the Kings, as evidenced by his request to be traded before the holiday freeze.

In the end, it was the Montreal Canadiens who got their hands on Danault, as the Québécois joins his former team, where he spent six seasons between 2015 and 2021.

We knew the Habs were on the case, and so were in the running to get Danault, but it was really in the last 2-3 days that talks with the Kings got serious.

Indeed, as Pierre LeBrun explains, it was in the last few days that the matter became concrete, and once that was the case, it was a very quick and easy process.

The Kings really wanted to get rid of Danault before the holiday season, which meant that time was against them with the trade freeze starting yesterday at midnight.

This clearly accelerated the process, as the Kings were in an urgent situation with little leverage.

Kent Hughes took advantage of the situation, giving away a second-round pick in exchange for the services of Danault, a pick he had once acquired with Patrik Laine in return for Jordan Harris.

In short, the Habs GM made a good move to solidify his team with an experienced left-handed center, and did so without giving away a player or a prospect.

We know that the Kings wanted Jake Evans in return, but Kent Hughes didn't flinch.

Overtime

– A nice gesture from Fowler.

– I love this mentality.

– Good news for the Senators.
