Today is an important day in the NHL.

Clubs have until tonight to make trades: the NHL's much-vaunted annual trade freeze kicks in tonight, and clubs can't make any moves until December 27 at 11:59pm.

Understandably, there must be more than one GM on the phone at the time of writing.

The file we're keeping a close eye on is that of Phillip Danault. The Kings' player has been at the heart of a thousand and one rumors over the past few days, and it looks like his departure is imminent—even if there's a chance he won't be traded.

And according to Frank Seravalli, several clubs are in the running… including the Habs. In fact, the tipster mentioned on his podcast that the Habs are the favorite to get Danault in a trade:

This doesn't indicate that a deal is about to happen… but it does indicate one thing in particular.

Kent Hughes is aggressive on the market right now. He wants to help his team by picking up a player who can play center, and it just goes to show how well the Canadiens' GM does his homework.

We know that the Kings want to do a player-for-player deal and that this is complicating things a bit right now. And we also know that Phillip Danault has what it takes to help the Canadiens, even if he's having a really tough season in California.

We've been talking about him a lot in the last few days, after all.

That said, we're about to get an answer: by midnight tonight, we'll know whether Danault will celebrate Christmas as a member of the Canadiens, the Kings… or someone else's organization.

It's the last push before Christmas for the various NHL clubs right now. And more than ever, it's time to keep an eye on Phillip Danault in Montreal.
