Tonight, for the first time in his career, Samuel Montembeault played for the Laval Rocket.

In a game against the Monsters in Cleveland, the Rocket had to cope without several impact players (Alex Belzile, Laurent Dauphin, and Joshua Roy) to try and win.

Not surprisingly, the Monsters had several chances to score during the game.

How did the Canadiens' goaltender, who was mainly there to get reps and not to win at all costs, do in his first game (of at least two) down low?

He did relatively well. In particular, he was able to make some good saves at times, which is always good for a goalie's confidence.

But he also allowed four goals in a 5-2 setback. The last one was into an open net.

It's important to understand that the goals weren't necessarily his fault. At a certain point, what's a guy to do against a play like that?

In the second period, Montembeault gave away a goal. Owen Sillinger managed to take a quality shot that's not easy for a goalie to stop.

Here it is.

On the Monsters' third net, though, the Québécois goalie already looked better. He quickly threw himself on the floor, and that didn't produce a great result.

But at the same time, where were his teammates?

The last goal the goalie allowed was shorthanded. Monty's view was obviously a little cloudy when it came time to award a final goal.

The result was this.

In all, the goalie played over 58 minutes and gave away four goals on 24 shots. Not a great stat line, let's face it.

But he's down there to shake off the rust and regain his confidence.

If he feels he's made good progress in that direction, that'll be something… because on the ice, through no fault of his own, he hasn't been able to make a difference.

A bit like in Montreal, really.

Meanwhile, in Montreal, Jakub Dobes faced just 15 shots in a game in which the Canadiens were in control and won 4-1. He made 14 straight saves after giving away a goal.

Had Monty known, he would have had to play that game instead…
