Bo Bichette and second base: teams have other options

Bo Bichette and second base: teams have other options

Bo Bichette, as we learned yesterday, says he's ready to sign at second base as a free agent. Is this to get a bigger market and not necessarily return to Toronto?

Obviously, we've known for a long time that this must be a possibility for the center forward. If it came out yesterday, it's undoubtedly to invigorate the market.

It's also worth noting that it came just after Ha-Seong Kim signed for Atlanta. He was the other big-name shortstop on the independent market.

We feel that teams don't necessarily have the means to go all out at shortstop in the current market. But the second cushion is another matter altogether.

If Bichette really were to switch positions (which would be great for him defensively), he'd be in the middle of a market that's a lot livelier. Because there are more second basemen out there who could switch. The same goes for second-base needs.

Mark Feinsand named a few in a recent paper.

In the free agent market, Luis Arraez is available. He's not much to write home about (not least because of his lack of power) and he's really not great defensively at second base, but he's a solution nonetheless.

But it's really on the trade market that things can get shaky.

Marcus Semien has already been traded (to the Mets), but Brandon Lowe, Brendan Donavan (who can help out at shortstop, but is better at other positions, including second base) and Ketel Marte are options right now.

There's a world out there in which many of these players could change addresses in the near future.

I don't know how much teams like to give Bichette a big contract (attached to a qualifying offer) rather than make a trade. After all, offensively speaking, Bichette is better than the guys on the market.

To be continued…
