Penguins trade: Does this change anything for Sidney Crosby?

Big news in the NHL.

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to be on the verge of a change of ownership: Fenway Sports Group has agreed in principle to sell the team to the Hoffmann family, according to Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun claims that the sale price should be between 1.7 and 1.8 billion U.S. dollars. The next step? The final sale of the club requires the approval of the NHL Board of Governors before it becomes official:

Frank Seravalli, meanwhile, reports that the Hoffmann family has not yet contacted Mario Lemieux, who will retain his minority stake in the deal.

But Seravalli also claims that Lemieux could be open to a “greater presence” around the team with the arrival of new owners.

To be continued.

But in all of this, I wonder if it changes anything for Sidney Crosby.

The guy is at the end of his career and maybe he's not interested in playing for a club that just got new owners. On the other hand, you have to wonder what the new owners will do with #87…

The Kid has already expressed his desire to finish his career in Pittsburgh. He spent several years of his life with the Penguins organization, and he's happy there too. He's said so on several occasions.

That said, in the context of Mario Lemieux keeping his share of the organization, it seems to me that it doesn't change much for Crosby in the end. I tend to think it would have been different if Lemieux had left too, because we know what a major impact he had on Crosby's career in his early NHL days.

But at the same time, we know that things can move fast in the National League…

Overtime

– Good.

– I'll always be impressed.

– Sad news.

– He's right.
