For those who missed yesterday's Canadiens-Sénateurs match in Quebec City, you missed quite a game: a game won by the Canadiens 5-0, but also a game marked by injuries and fights. On the heels of this high-profile warm-up game, Sports Minister Isabelle Charest voiced her dissatisfaction with the fights. According to her, they have no place in professional hockey.

Charest doesn't have the power to change things since it's a professional sport, but she did have a say in eliminating fighting in the QMJHL. She may not have the power to change things for the NHL, but she has a bigger reach than most.

I don't believe in fighting in hockey.

Yesterday, there were four fights and they were big ones, apart from that. I think fights are good for the show and for creating jobs. Obviously, it's not like in the early 2000s when some guys were strictly there to throw down the gloves, but there are players who check, play tough and fight for a living. We have to respect that. I understand the point of people who don't want to see fights in the NHL anymore, but, unfortunately for them, they're here to stay.
