This morning, we got some big news from Florida: Aleksander Barkov's season may already be over. The Panthers' captain has undergone surgery on his right knee… and we're (really) fearing the worst. It hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but there's no smoke without fire. That said, one thing is clear: Barkov will miss at least a large part of the season. For the Panthers, this is a (very) hard blow… especially as the club will also be without Matthew Tkachuk for the first few months of the season. Suddenly, then, we realize that the Atlantic is starting to open up… and that there may be a spot up for grabs for the Canadiens.Because however good the club is at facing adversity, we're talking about two big losses.
Brutal blow for the two-time defending champs. Already without Tkachuk as well until December. But if any team can overcome adversity, it's the Panthers. https://t.co/xmbot4Uowc –

Because salary-wise, it would work: Barkov's $10m could be placed on the long-term injured list, opening the door to adding Crosby's $8.7m to the payroll.
We'll tell you how

And let's not forget that, in a worst-case scenario in Florida, the club has no interest in trying to get Gavin McKenna: the Panthers' first-round pick belongs to the Blackhawks and is unprotected.
Expect the Panthers to be aggressive, then… although it could come later in the year.
Not that I think it will come to this, but worth noting that the Florida Panthers' 2026 1st-round pick is not protected.
Condition was the pick sliding to 2027 if the Panthers traded their 2026 1st before the 2025 Draft (they didn't). Could give Chicago two shots at lottery. https://t.co/y1fRxQqgwh –Marco D'Amico (@mndamico) September 26, 2025

– I love it.
The Sharks are throwing it back! Their new “Heritage 2.0” threads pay homage to their 90s and 00s jerseys with a new grey trim on the shoulders, arms and waistline.
