The Rangers are looking for a new coach.
Sullivan and the Rangers are reportedly close to agreeing on the terms of an expensive deal. Emily Kaplan (ESPN) even talks about one of the most lucrative coaching contracts in NHL history:
The New York Rangers are in advanced contract talks to name Mike Sullivan head coach, sources told @KevinWeekes & me. It is expected to be one of the richest coaching contracts in NHL history.

Ultimately, the Rangers seem to be on the verge of finding their new main man.
But there's more to it than that, too.
And this news would have been a little hard to predict a few weeks ago…
What is it?
According to what's circulating at the moment… John Tortorella could also be joining Mike Sullivan in the Rangers organization.
Torts and Sullivan know each other well, having worked together behind the bench for the US team at the 4 Nations Tournament.
And Torts also knows the organization because he was the Rangers' driver for almost five years (season 08-09 through to season 12-13):
Following on this below from Vince's original report, looks like #NYR are progressing on a contract with Mike Sullivan to be their next HC per @emilymkaplan & @KevinWeekes. John Tortorella, who worked w/ Sully on Team USA's 4 Nations bench, may also be returning to the Rangers. https://t.co/jkHu0C4Akt

John Tortorella lost his job in the last few weeks in Philadelphia.
But Torts is also 66 and that's why some didn't see him returning to the NHL.
Clearly, it's a possibility right now.
That said, at this stage of his career, maybe it's what he needs too.
By being hired as an assistant, Tortorella wouldn't have to constantly deal with the media and he'd have a different approach too.
He's experienced, he's already won the Stanley Cup (as has Sullivan, by the way) and maybe that would help the Rangers get back on track.
Because we know it's been tough for many reasons this season in the Big Apple.
Adding Mike Sullivan and John Tortorella, two coaches who have proven themselves (en masse) in the NHL, I find it hard to believe that this is a bad idea.
Then again, things went all wrong in New York during the 24-25 season, and we need to find a group of coaches who can take the team to the very top.
And between the two of them, Torts and Sullivan have the CV to help that club.
