Still in the midst of a playoff run, the Habs were facing the Flyers on Thursday night. Philadelphia had just parted ways with their head coach John Tortorella.

Here is the Habs’ lineup:

Here is the Flyers’ lineup:

True to their habit, the Canadiens had a bad start to the game.

Matvei Michkov only needed less than two minutes to open the scoring. A huge blow to the Habs fans who dreamed of seeing him being drafted by Montreal.

Alex Newhook then gave a glimmer of hope to the Habs fans with a powerful and precise shot to tie the game.

Lane Hutson collected his 50th assist of the season on Newhook’s goal. He thus became the fifth rookie defenseman in NHL history to reach that plateau.

Unfortunately for the Habs, this brief moment of joy was then ruined.

It was even a Quebecer who came to spoil the party. Nicolas Deslauriers completely surprised Jakub Dobes by scoring his first goal of the season.

Let’s say that very few people could have predicted that!

The Flyers completed their demolition work in the first period with a third goal signed Sean Couturier. Matvei Michkov collected a second point in this game with an assist on the goal.

Despite a first period filled with disappointment, Dobes ended it with a superb performance at the end of the period.

After 20 minutes of play, the Habs were trailing 3-1.

The players from both teams didn’t like each other in this game.

It was heating up in front of the Flyers’ net during the second period, and Travis Konecny and Juraj Slafkovsky were both thrown out. While Konecny was furious and throwing insults at Slaf, the latter didn’t seem to care.

The Habs didn’t concede a goal in the second period, but they didn’t necessarily have good news either.

Brendan Gallagher had to leave for the dressing room after making contact with the boards on a hit.

It didn’t seem serious, but he still had to retreat to the dressing room.

Montreal had the opportunity to reduce the deficit to a single goal during a powerplay late in the second period, but nothing worked. Samuel Ersson was even saved by his post!

After two periods, the Habs were still trailing 3-1.

The good news for the Habs was Brendan Gallagher’s return to the bench at the start of the third period.

To add to the good news, Montreal even managed to reduce the deficit to a single goal! Cole Caufield managed to outsmart Ersson with a shot at the mouth of the net.

Lane Hutson collected a second assist in this game on Caufield’s goal.

Except that the Flyers quickly regained a two-goal lead thanks to a goal from Tyson Foerster. Martin St-Louis, however, believed there was interference on Jakub Dobes.

After review, the referees decided to award the goal!

Since St-Louis didn’t get his way, the Habs were penalized. The Flyers took advantage of this powerplay and a bad turnover to score a fifth goal.

Christian Dvorak then scored the Habs’ third goal of the game. He thus reached the 10-goal plateau this season.

Michkov, however, reminded the Habs just how bad their evening was just 18 seconds later. Mike Matheson was once again the victim of a bad turnover, and the Flyers’ rookie was able to score his second goal of the game.

We really got to see a true avalanche of goals in this third period.

Patrik Laine was the next to score, reducing the deficit to two goals.

It was, however, too late because the Flyers won this game 6-4.

Montreal thus missed another opportunity to gain ground in the playoff race.

Luckily for the Habs, the Red Wings also lost their game on Thursday night. Martin St-Louis’ team will be back in action on Friday, when they face the Hurricanes in Raleigh.

Overtime

Ouch.

– This is a big weakness of Martin St-Louis.

– Dobes rebounded well after allowing three goals.

– The Habs players were probably not very happy.

– The Habs need the support of this trio.

– Hutson continues to make his mark.

– Probably.

Not bad at all.
