7 shocking trades and the 7 worst deals of the modern era at the NHL trade deadline

On February 26, 2008, the Pittsburgh Penguins caused a surprise, acquiring the services of Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis, via the Atlanta Thrashers. Thus, Ray Shero, GM of the Penguins at the time, was able to bring help to Sidney Crosby. Pittsburgh gave up Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a first-round pick, to get Hossa.

In terms of a transaction that came out of nowhere, the one involving Mikko Rantanen to the Hurricanes was one. On January 24, 2025, Rantanen was traded to Carolina, along with Taylor Hall, in exchange for Martin Necas and Jack Drury, who took the direction of Denver, notably.

Owen Tippett was sent to Philadelphia with a third-round pick in 2023 and a first-round pick in 2024 (Sam O’Reilly). Claude Giroux, Connor Bunnaman, German Rubtsov and a fifth-round pick in 2024 went the other way.
