Montembeault and Hellebuyck have similar statistics since the return of the 4 nations

The Canadiens are currently battling for a playoff spot thanks to a great streak of success since the return of the break from the Confrontation of the 4 nations.

The first trio of the Canadiens is working well in scoring important goals, but we must not forget the contribution of Samuel Montembeault in the net.

In the last episode of Tellement Hockey by Radio-Canada Sports, Martin Leclerc explained why Montembeault is helping the Canadiens achieve so much success by pointing to a certain statistic: his consistent efficiency rate in each game.

Since the return of the break from the 4 nations, Monty has played eight games. Of these eight games, he finished six with an efficiency rate above .900. As Leclerc explained, this kind of consistency is something that even Carey Price did not always do.

He even went so far as to say that it is not the kind of thing that Price did necessarily throughout the season when he won the Hart Trophy.

The performance of the Canadiens’ goalkeeper is simply surprising. Every time he is in front of the net, he gives his team a chance to win. The proof: he has seven wins and one loss in overtime since the return of the break. He has not yet lost in regulation time.

This eight-game streak without a loss in regulation time is his best since the start of the season.

Looking at Montembeault’s statistics since the return of the break, we notice that they are very similar to a certain Connor Hellebuyck, who is by far the favorite for the Vezina Trophy this season and is fighting in the Hart Trophy race.

Since February 22, Montembeault has a .922 efficiency rate compared to Hellebuyck’s .920. It’s not the best in the NHL, but it’s already good to be able to compare (and even surpass) the best.

Montembeault also has an average of 2.09 goals allowed since the return to play, which is slightly less good than Hellebuyck’s 1.96, but is getting closer.

The playoff race is far from over, just like Montembeault’s streak of games without a loss in regulation time. The Canadiens will greatly need his help against other teams that have the wind in their sails, like the Islanders, Avalanche, and Blues.

Overtime

– Simoneau does not mince his words.

– We like this respect.

– Demidov is a patient guy. It will get back in place.

– Calgary is the only Canadian team that is currently not in a position to make the playoffs.
