Sports fans love to follow their favorite sports, and in a way, they’re part of the team.
Their presence livens up the games and they don’t dare show their love for the sport.
For New York Islanders fans, there’s one trade that didn’t go down well, and that continues to make them react: John Tavares’ departure for the Toronto Maple Leafs 5 years ago.
The Islanders’ general manager at the time, Garth Snow, thinks it’s unfair that Tavares should receive so much scorn from the fans.
Snow believes the fact that Tavares is no longer with the Islanders has caused fan hatred, but it’s not just that.
What caused the fans‘ hatred was that during the 2017-2018 season, Tavares was in the last year of his contract and had left open the possibility of re-signing with the team.
Obviously, that didn’t happen, and fans would have preferred him to be traded at the deadline for attractive assets, rather than lose him to the free agents for nothing.
However, Snow reports that the decision not to trade Tavares under any conditions came from the team’s owners.
“I feel so bad that Tavares is being trashed for something that isn’t his fault. The Islanders could have traded him if they wanted to, but the decision was made. So it’s not his fault the Islanders didn’t trade him.” – Garth Snow
Snow is absolutely right. It’s not his fault at all that Tavares left.
Let’s hope they understand the situation a little more and are more welcoming, but above all, less difficult with him, because he most likely spent excellent years in New York.
