Lane Hutson: “one of the NHL’s most exciting prospects,” says an expert

In Montreal, Lane Hutson is a prospect that has fans dreaming. Whether it’s his countless highlights or his obvious offensive instincts, many are already dreaming of seeing him in a major role with the Tricolore over the long term.

If he continues his development and is paired with a good partner (David Reinbacher, for example), he has the potential to be. There’s still a long way to go, but it’s possible.

And even though he’s a very popular guy in the Montreal market, we’re increasingly noticing that he’s the talk of the circuit. Today, for example, Tony Ferrari (a prospect expert for The Hockey News) chatted about the prospect nursery, and he had this to say about young Hutson:

Hutson is one of the NHL’s most exciting prospects and should be a favorite for the Hobey Baker Trophy. – Tony Ferrari

Clearly, the more you read the text, the more you sense that Ferrari is thinking big for Hutson. In addition to stating that he sees Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes in his game (it’s really not the first time these names have come up), he compares his offensive instincts to those of an elite striker.

And in addition to seeing him among the crème de la crème of CH prospects, he also places him in a very enviable position across the league:

He’s the most dynamic blue-line prospect in the entire NHL. – Tony Ferrari

What’s striking is the extent to which the young defenseman impresses absolutely everywhere he goes. Over the past few days, for example, he’s been destroying everything in his path at Team USA’s summer camp.

He had a day off today, but the CH’s other camp prospect, Jacob Fowler, had a period. During this period, he was foiled by a major-league feint from Cole Eiserman, one of the most promising prospects in the upcoming draft.

But getting back to Ferrari, he’s a big proponent of the Tricolore’s bank of prospects. He has his doubts about Logan Mailloux (whom he sees as a potential supporting defenseman on a second pair, at best), but he really likes the depth of it, especially at defense.

He’d like to see 1-2 top prospects up front, but likes the team’s plans for Juraj Slafkovský and Owen Beck, among many others.

In short, once again, the CH’s crop of hopefuls is getting compliments, but it’s once again Lane Hutson who steals the show among the group. If the club can develop a good portion of them, there’s real cause for optimism for the club’s future.
