Laval could be the best option for David Reinbacher

Over the years, the Habs haven’t been very patient with their youngsters. Jesperi Kotkaniemi (3rd overall) made the jump to the NHL in his very first season. The same goes for Juraj Slafkosvky (1st overall). The Slovak didn’t start his first season after the European or AHL drafts.

So where will David Reinbacher, another European drafted very high by the Habs, play?

The Austrian has several options open to him. There’s the Habs in the NHL, of course, but he could also play in Laval under Jean-François Houle or in Switzerland. Seeing him return to his homeland is less likely than the other two options, but you never know.

According to Simon Boisvert, who was Tony Marinaro’s guest on the Sick podcast, the youngster should play the whole season in Laval.

Boisvert was clear: even if he excels in the AHL, he doesn’t want him to be promoted to the NHL. He wants the youngster to familiarize himself with the North American style of play. And if the Rocket makes the playoffs, he wants Reinbacher to get a taste of the playoffs. Because, let’s face it, the CH won’t be making the playoffs in 2022-2023.

In any case, with the congestion on the blue line, I doubt the man who wore number 36 at development camp will be part of the defensive core this season. At least, not at the start of the season.

Of course, there’s plenty of room for him on the right side, but the NHL isn’t a development league. We can’t say it often enough. Without high-quality right-handed defensemen, the CH has the luxury of a lot of defensemen. Why a luxury? Because they don’t need Reinbacher right away to fill a hole on the right.

Personally, I’d rather see Reinbacher acclimatize to American and Canadian rinks in Laval than in Montreal. In the AHL, he’ll have the opportunity to play on the power play. He’ll also get a lot more playing time than in the metropolis.

We mustn’t rush the youngster. Take the example of the Red Wings and their young players…
