Owen Beck: a goal and a big night in his team’s victory

Tonight, it was game #4 of the series pitting the Peterborough Petes against the London Knights in the OHL finals. For the Tricolore, it’s obviously an intriguing series, with two of the organization’s top prospects, Owen Beck and Logan Mailloux, facing off for the occasion.

After three games, the Petes had a 2-1 lead in the series, thanks in part to Beck’s fine work. He found the back of the net in game #3.

Tonight, then, the importance of the game was paramount. While the Knights wanted to bring the series back to a tie, the Petes had the opportunity to push them into the wire by taking a 3-1 lead.

And even though the Knights scored the first goal of the game (Easton Cowan scored in the first period), the Petes showed their teeth quite impressively in the second period. A three-goal outburst gave them the lead.

Of the lot, the second goal was scored by Beck, who went in with a powerful shot from a wide angle.

Clearly, he doesn’t need to be in the slot to get the ropes moving.

And in addition to scoring a goal, Beck had quite a night’s work in the face-off circle. He won 16 of his 24 duels and was his coach’s most trusted man there.

Clearly, he has all the makings of a future luxury third center.

That said, the Knights showed their character in the third period. They scored two goals (Mailloux earned an assist on both) to bring the teams back to within one goal of each other.

However, the Petes ended any hopes of a comeback with a fifth goal, this time in an empty net.

They now take a 3-1 lead in the series, pushing the Knights to the wire. Game 5 of the series takes place on Friday night.

Beck and the Petes look set to get the better of Mailloux and the Knights. Let’s see if they can finish the job and secure their ticket to the Memorial Cup.

Extension

In the QMJHL, the Remparts also won tonight. In doing so, they pushed the Mooseheads to the wire (they lead the series 3-1) and will also have the opportunity to secure their ticket to the Memorial Cup on Friday night.
