P.K. Subban’s father attacks sports betting ads

Over the past few years, the sports betting phenomenon has been gaining momentum. Across North America, more and more companies are launching betting platforms, and not all of them are legal. In fact, in Quebec, Mise-O-Jeu (a division of Loto-Québec) is supposed to manage the whole operation.

However, anyone who has watched a field hockey game in recent years (in fact, especially since 2020) knows very well that sports betting advertisements during games are constant. Some of them promote Mise-O-Jeu, of course, but they often feature illegal platforms (or platforms on the verge of legality).

And that’s clearly dangerous. After all, constant overexposure to betting ads (which are a form of gambling) leads people to do more of it. And because it’s so addictive, it can quickly become a slippery slope.

That’s why a group led by P.K. Subban’s father, Karl, has made it their mission to tackle this phenomenon.

The Ban Ads for Gambling group aims to reduce the substantial number of sports betting ads on TV airwaves. According to the group, during an average game on Sportsnet, there are no less than 10 minutes of exposure to gambling ads.

That’s absolutely enormous.

According to the group, the ads are directed at a young audience who are particularly prone to not knowing how to gamble responsibly. Putting sports stars (Connor McDavid, Wayne Gretzky and Auston Matthews, for example) front and center clearly doesn’t help.

And in fact, the group’s argument holds up. The issue isn’t to stop sports betting, but to stop constantly overexposing people to something with real risks.

We’ll see if the actions of the group led by Subban have an impact, and I sincerely hope they do. Sports betting addiction can get out of hand and lead to dangerous situations, after all.
