We may have just started a new decade, but this year’s Oscar nominations feel stuck in the past.
Joker is leading the pack with 11 nominations, following by Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, 1917 and The Irishman with 10 each – but the big story is the lack of diversity among the acting categories and the exclusion of female directors.
Cynthia Erivo was the only person of colour to be nominated for acting for her role in Harriet. Greta Gerwig, who was predicted to get a directing nomination for Little Women, was shut out of the category (Todd Phillips snuck in for Joker instead).
Other major snubs include Jennifer Lopez (who didn’t get a Supporting Actress nomination for Hustlers), Awkwafina (whose The Farewell was snubbed in acting categories and Best Picture), Lupita Nyong’o (who failed to be recognized in the Best Actress category for Us), the cast of Parasite (who didn’t receive any Supporting acting nominations), and some major Best Actor hopefuls who didn’t make the cut (Adam Sandler for Uncut Gems, Christian Bale for Ford vs Ferrari, Eddie Murphy for Dolemite Is My Name, Taron Egerton for Rocketman, and Robert De Niro for The Irishman).
It wasn’t all snubs. There were some surprises when the nominations were announced, including The Two Pope's Jonathan Pryce nabbing a Best Actor nomination in an incredibly competitive field, Kathy Bates scoring a Supporting Actress nod for Richard Jewel, and Tom Hanks getting his first Oscar nomination in nearly 20 years for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Scarlett Johansson, who hadn’t been nominated before, scored two acting nominations this year – Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit, and Best Actress for A Marriage Story.
