Earlier today, Darcy the Flying Hedgehog's owner took to Instagram to break some seriously sad news: Darcy's gone.

"I regret to inform you that Darcy passed away," wrote Shota Tsukamoto. "I am grateful to have met Darcy, and that people around the world could get to know Darcy, too. I have put together a small book of memories of Darcy. When you're feeling sad, or things aren't going well, I hope that looking at this book will put a smile on your face. Everyone, thank you very much for your support."
We'll miss this cute (and prickly) Internet sensation and we thought we'd take a moment to not only remember our favourite hedgehog, but also to honour four other famous creatures we won't be forgetting any time soon.

4) Keiko the Orca
You probably know this male orca as the star of 1993 hit film Free Willy. You might also have heard about him on the news following a failed attempt to reintegrate him back into the wild. Keiko died in 2003 when he was (about) 27 years old.

3) Moose the Jack Russell Terrier
Moose had a longer career than most human actors in Hollywood, as he portrayed Eddie Crane on TV sitcom Frasier season after season. Fun fact: His son Enzo was often used as his stunt double. Moose died in 2006 at the age of 15.

2) Gidget the Chihuahua
If you love Taco Bell - or just love super cute animal mascots - then you surely know Gidget. She passed away in 2009 and left a huge gap in the lives of all talking dog lovers.

1) Colonel Meow the Himalayan–Persian cat
Known for his scowl and the way he'd lovingly call his humans "slave beasts", Colonel Meow became an Internet sensation almost as soon as his picture hit the web. He was good friends with Grumpy Cat and Lil' Bub and had hundreds of thousands of followers. He passed away on January 29 of this year.
