Actor Smackdown: Robert De Niro vs. Kiefer Sutherland

Robert De Niro, who had his first major film roles at the age of 30 in Bang the Drum Slowly and Mean Streets, directed by Martin Scorsese, is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors of his generation, not only thanks to his mad skills in front of a camera but also his versatility. In addition to becoming a long-time collaborator with Scorsese – a great partnership between two mega forces – De Niro has given us a slew of iconic movie characters in both drama and comedy in movies like The Godfather Part II, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Analyze This, Meet the Parents and Silver Linings Playbook.

Only slightly behind, Kiefer Sutherland got his breakthrough role at the age of 35 when he was cast to play Jack Bauer on super successful TV series 24. However, even with this great role, the fact that his parents are super actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas and that he is good friend and collaborator of director Joel Schumacher, Kiefer, unlike De Niro, has yet to bring us a mind-blowing performance on the big screen. Point: De Niro

The amount of nominations and awards these two have received is staggering, but when it comes to catching the big fish – an Oscar – De Niro makes it look like child’s play, having been nominated 7 times (most recently in 2012 for Silver Linings Playbook) and winning twice.

Meanwhile, Kiefer’s biggest catches are two Emmys and a Golden Globe and although they’re the biggest achievements a TV actor could hope for, they’re no Oscar… sorry. Point: De Niro

Legal issues
In February 1998, during a film shoot in France, French police questioned De Niro for nine hours, then passed him on for more questioning to a magistrate, all over a prostitution ring. De Niro denied the whole thing and vowed to never return to France and make sure his friends didn’t visit the country either.

Sutherland was arrested in Los Angeles in 2007 for a second time – the first being in 2004 - and charged once again with driving under the influence. The DUI cost him $25,000 for bail and 48 days in jail. And it seems Kiefer’s bad habits are hard to break. In 2009, Sutherland was taken in by NYPD for head-butting fashion designer Jack McCollough, one half of Proenza Schouler, following a fundraiser in New York. A FUNDRAISER! Although the charges were later dropped, the fact is, Kiefer is a little too naughty, even for us. Point: De Niro

Verdict: De Niro, duh.
